“The Best of all Worlds”
|
| Main Programme |
| Malcolm Wilson, Managing Director and Country Manager, Norbert Dentressangle Logistics UK Ltd |
Historically, organisations which have enjoyed access to best in class distribution operations (either their own of through a third party) have been understandably reluctant to share the competitive advantage this brings and have been prepared to pay for this privilege. Whilst ‘shared-user logistics’ is by no means a new phenomenon, the majority of networks are ‘one size fits all’, in which customers must often be prepared to compromise on service levels in return for cost savings. However, an increasing number of companies are waking up to the possibility of a new breed of shared networks developed specifically to serve (often competing) organisations with a large number of shared customers, where those prepared to collaborate can benefit from both significant cost savings and premium service levels. Two case studies from the food and manufacturing sectors will show how this is working for Norbert Dentressangle’s customers.

“Why the tide is turning…”
|
| Main Programme |
| Peter Ward, Executive Director of Freight by Water |
The case for water borne freight is pretty clear. It is a more environmentally and economically sustainable mode than road. It delivers on the classic logistics principles of right product, right place, right time; moreover, in addition to ticking the carbon credits box, the business case for freight by water is also proven on a p/l basis.
In this presentation, Peter Ward asks why logistics professionals whose DC is more than 50 miles from Felixstowe or Southampton would opt for freight by road, when the UK offers a coastal network of over 100 ports, not to mention a network of inland waterways. In by-passing road transportation, importers/exporters avoid toll charges, congestion and pollution, simultaneously reducing their fuel costs and carbon emissions.
Freight by Water urges shippers, LSPs and demand side customers alike to take a radical look at the
benefits of modal shift – and at the government grants available to support it.
